WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) today released the following statement after the Senate passed legislation reauthorizing child care programs for low-income families:

“Hard-working mothers and fathers depend on safe, reliable, affordable child care while they work to earn a living, but unfortunately for low-income families, this is not always easy to come by,” Fischer said. “This legislation reaffirms our commitment to providing access to quality child care programs for parents while they earn a steady paycheck or go back to school. I am pleased the Senate broadly passed this commonsense bill to ensure America’s working families have the flexibility and opportunity to earn a living, knowing their children are in good hands.”

This bipartisan legislation, the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 2013, reauthorizes existing low-income child care programs through 2020, and improves requirements related to health and safety standards for licensed child care providers. The bill, which was approved in the House of Representatives in September, passed in the Senate today by a vote of 88-1, and must now be signed by the president to become law.
