FISCHER, KLOBUCHAR, JOHNSON'S RURAL COMMUNICATION RESOLUTION CLEARS COMMITTEE

The resolution, which underscores the need to resolve rural call completion problems and crack down on carriers that discriminate against rural customers, passed the Senate Commerce Committee and will now head for a full vote in the Senate

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Deb Fischer (R-NE), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Tim Johnson (D-SD) today announced that their bipartisan resolution calling for action to improve rural communications passed the Senate Commerce Committee, paving the way for a full vote in the Senate. The resolution underscores the need to resolve rural call completion problems and crack down on carriers that discriminate against rural customers.

“I continue to hear from many Nebraskans about the serious communications challenges and safety concerns resulting from call completion problems,” said Fischer. “A 21st century communications infrastructure is essential for communities in both rural and urban areas across the country. This resolution highlights the strong bipartisan support for addressing this issue, and I look forward to continuing efforts with my colleagues to improve access to adequate phone and Internet service for all Nebraskans.”

“Call completion problems don’t just prevent families from staying in touch; they hurt small businesses that depend on phone service, and can even endanger citizens trying to make urgent calls,” said Klobuchar. “This is an important step forward for this resolution, and I will continue to work to make sure communities have access to reliable phone service regardless of where they live.”

“The pervasive call completion problem is very troubling, especially in a rural state like South Dakota. The problem is not just frustrating for those who cannot connect with family and friends, but it also presents a serious public safety concern,” said Johnson. “I am pleased this bipartisan resolution passed the Senate Commerce Committee and look forward to this coming before the full Senate. I will continue pushing for this problem to be resolved so consumers in rural communities can once again count on reliable telephone service.”
