WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) today released the following statement after Senate Democrats held a press conference regarding their paid leave proposal, known as the FAMILY Act:

“The only bipartisan paid leave solution in Congress right now is my Strong Families Act with Senator Angus King. Our bill offers incentives for employers to offer employees up to 12 weeks of fully paid family leave. It is a way to begin to provide some relief for Americans who are juggling responsibilities at home and in the workplace.

“The proposal would offer flexibility for families without raising costs for the many families in this country who run businesses. Most importantly, our solution can pass. The American people are tired of political posturing; they want actual progress. My colleagues should join me in supporting this doable and much-needed step forward that will make a difference in people’s lives.”

Senator Fischer’s Strong Families Act would create a tax credit to incentivize businesses to offer at least two weeks of paid family leave per year. The leave would be separate from other vacation or sick leave, and workers could take it on an hourly basis. Employers would receive a nonrefundable tax credit equal to 25 percent of what they pay employees during their leave. Fischer and King also introduced versions of this bill the past two Congresses.
