Fischer Statement on Nuclear Posture Review
LINCOLN, NEB. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), the chairman of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, released the following statement regarding the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) released by the Department of Defense today:
“The recently-released Nuclear Posture Review charts a responsible path forward to ensure our nuclear forces continue to deter strategic attacks on the homeland and assure our allies. It confirms the modernization effort established by the previous administration, and continues many of the basic principles that have long been a part of U.S. nuclear policy.
“I’m pleased to see the document’s clear-eyed recognition of how the security landscape has changed since the 2010 Nuclear Posture Review. As chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, I have held classified briefings on foreign nuclear programs and one fact is undeniable: our strategic competitors continue to expand their nuclear capabilities. Standing still is not an option; we must ensure our ability to deter conflict keeps pace with the changing global security environment.
“I strongly agree with the sense of urgency expressed in the document for the modernization of our nuclear forces and the infrastructure that supports our deterrent. As the document notes, we have not made sufficient progress on these challenges and, as a result, there is no margin for additional delay.
“I appreciate the hard work of the military and civilian leaders that has gone into this review. The Senate Armed Services Committee, and the Strategic Forces Subcommittee in particular, will further examine the NPR’s details and the associated implementation plans of the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy.”
The 2018 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) outlines the nuclear policies, strategy, and capabilities necessary to keep America and our allies safe.
