Op-Eds

Today I will take the oath of office to serve as your U.S. senator for another term. I am deeply grateful for the renewed trust you have placed in me and truly honored to have the opportunity to continue working for you in the United States Senate.

Six years ago, I pledged that I would build relationships across the aisle and deliver positive results for Nebraskans. We have been effective together.

New and updated facilities for our veterans are underway in Omaha and Lincoln. Fixes to important levee networks now protect the drinking water for two-thirds of Nebraskans. Critical federal dollars from a highway bill and funding from multiple competitive transportation grants will improve our roads.

Other challenges remain ongoing. The start of the 116th Congress is a chance to refocus on our shared priorities and map out a plan to secure the brighter future that’s within our reach. Together we can keep families safe, improve our core infrastructure in urban and rural areas and promote new opportunities for our agriculture producers.

This year I will continue to serve as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, where I am third in line in seniority. America’s most potent threats today are Russia and China. Progress has been made rebuilding our military in recent years, but more significant action is required as the competitiveness of other world powers is only growing.

The key to protecting the homeland is the modernization of our nuclear deterrent. As the proud home to U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraskans know well the great importance of the command’s deterrence mission in protecting our nation from strategic attacks. In the Senate, I will continue to fight to update our nuclear enterprise and deliver the resources the men and women of StratCom need to do their jobs.
