Our nation recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment's adoption. Because of the trail the suffragists blazed, women today can fully participate in the core function of our republic. I am proud that many of those suffragists came from Nebraska.

Their legacy will continue to inspire the generations of women to come who will write our next chapter.

Steps to Help Those Struggling with Mental Illness

There is a mental health crisis in this nation, and COVID-19 has only caused depression and suicide rates to rise. To help combat this and benefit our mental health organizations, schools, and local governments, I have introduced a bipartisan bill to establish an interactive, web-based dashboard to make it easier for these groups to find and apply for federal mental health grants.

Most organizations do not have a full-time grant writer to search for and fill out applications. This dashboard will be a resource for these groups, especially those in rural areas. I am proud to have bipartisan support on this bill and look forward to moving it through the Senate. For more information about this legislation, read my interview with the Scottsbluff Star-Herald.

A Grand Opening!

The new VA ambulatory care clinic in Omaha recently opened its doors to provide high-quality medical care for our veterans. This $86 million clinic includes 157,000 square feet of suites for outpatient surgeries, a section designed specifically for care for female veterans, and new exam rooms.

Since first being elected into the U.S. Senate, this project has been a priority of mine. It has been an honor to work with Nebraska community leaders and businesses on legislation to create the public-private partnership that ensured the clinic was built in record time and approximately $34 million under budget.

This Nebraska facility now serves as a national model for efficiency and cost-savings for other communities looking for new ways to help their veterans. Because we came together in a Nebraska way, we are going to be able to provide our veterans with the care they need and deserve.

Assessing COVID Relief

I recently hosted a virtual round table with community leaders in East Central Nebraska to discuss how this pandemic is impacting their cities, businesses, schools, and healthcare systems. As we continue to face new challenges, it was good to hear how resources provided in the CARES Act have helped our Nebraska communities. I appreciate the hard work of our Nebraska leaders in showing how we can keep our state open safely.
