GERING, NEB. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) issued the following statement today after the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) announced a $17,615 grant to the Great Plains Black History Museum, Archives and Interpretive Center in Omaha:

“I’m pleased to see the Great Plains Black History Museum, Archives and Interpretive Center being awarded this well-deserved grant. With this grant, the museum can now provide free educational programing to teach about African American history in the heartland. I look forward to seeing how this program will impact the museum and the Omaha community.”

More information on the grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services:

The Great Plains Black Museum and Interpretive Center will provide the greater Omaha metropolitan community with community education programs focused on the involvement of African Americans in the exploration, settlement, and development of Nebraska and the Great Plains. Twenty-four free programs will be planned and presented in cooperation with area history professors, drawing upon the archival records of the museum to help inspire youth and visitors of all backgrounds. The programs will also be designed to provide an opportunity for participants to learn how to research their own ancestral history.
