Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) today issued the following statement upon voting in favor of the Sanders-McCain veterans bill, which passed by a vote of 93-3:

“I’m pleased the Senate has approved legislation that will finally give the tens of thousands of veterans awaiting medical appointments access to the care they were promised. This bipartisan agreement enacts needed reforms included in legislation I supported to expand care options for veterans awaiting treatment and make it easier to fire VA employees who fail to perform their duties. It also takes meaningful steps to address scheduling failures at the VA in the long-term.

“While passage of this agreement signals progress, there is still a long road ahead to fix the systemic problems plaguing the VA. Congress must execute rigorous oversight to ensure these reforms are implemented properly, and as investigation into the scandal continues, those found responsible for misconduct must be held accountable and prosecuted when appropriate. I will be working closely with my colleagues as these efforts continue to repair this badly broken system so that our nation’s heroes finally receive the medical treatment they have so dutifully earned.”
