OMAHA, NEB. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) released the following statement today after visiting a volunteer team serving Habitat for Humanity of Omaha as they work to build affordable housing in the Omaha area:

“It was so great to visit the team serving Habitat for Humanity of Omaha as they work to ensure that Omaha families have roofs over their heads. Their dedication to helping Nebraskans is admirable and they are a perfect representation of the generous spirit of the Good Life.”

Habitat for Humanity provides housing to low-income individuals. An AmeriCorps NCCC team serving with Habitat for Humanity is constructing 10-15 homes in the Omaha community. NCCC team members are assisting with framing, painting, siding, installing insulation and drywall, and conducting interior and exterior repairs and landscaping.

Earlier this year, Senator Fischer reintroduced the bipartisan, bicameral BUILD Act, S. 371, which would allow nonprofits to use less complex forms when issuing 0% mortgage loans for charitable purposes. New rules require all mortgage lenders who make five or more loans per year to fill out lengthy and costly disclosures to protect consumers.

Habitat for Humanity issues 0% interest mortgages to its clients, who are often the families receiving Habitat homes. Because the new forms are more complicated and expensive to complete, most volunteers are not able complete them. The BUILD Act would lift this burden by allowing nonprofits to satisfy disclosure requirements that currently impose additional constraints on nonprofits like Habitat. The House of Representatives passed a similar version of the BUILD Act in May.
