Dear Friend,

In July, I spoke out against the assassination attempt on President Trump and the failure of the Secret Service to keep him and others safe at a rally in Pennsylvania.

I reaffirmed my support for Israel following Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s address in Congress, and I reaffirmed my support for our ground-based nuclear forces as a deterrent against China and Russia.

As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I advanced an additional $16 million for the construction of an Agricultural Research Service Facility at UNL. I also secured $116 million for Offutt Air Force Base.

Finally, I hosted National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy in Nebraska to see the good work of UNL’s Midwest Roadside Safety Facility testing the safety issues posed by electric vehicles.

Read more about my work for you below.

A shocking attempt on President Trump’s life this month prompted questions on how an event like this could occur, and who was responsible.

It is the Secret Service’s responsibility to protect our country’s leader. That day marked a monumental failure on the agency’s part, one that must never be allowed to happen again. I joined my colleagues in demanding a full-fledged investigation and affirming Director Kimberly Cheatle’s resignation.

The defense of America and our allies is critical to our country’s prosperity. But some believe our land-based nuclear forces are unnecessary. That’s foolish. Abandoning a critical leg of our nuclear triad would put us at risk from fellow nuclear powers like China and Russia. Last month, I reaffirmed my support for the Sentinel program.

I also reaffirmed my support for Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s address to Congress made it clear that Israel needs America to stand with them as they fight a just war against terror. As Prime Minister Netanyahu said, Israel’s victory will be our victory.

Last month, I secured $116 million to fund state-of-the-art facilities at Offutt Air Force Base. This includes funding to begin the construction of new hangars and other facilities to support the new Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) aircraft. The SAOC will replace Offutt’s existing fleet of E-4B aircraft, known as the National Airborne Operations Center (NAOC). These aircraft—sometimes referred to as “doomsday planes”—are meant to survive under all conditions, including a potential nuclear attack, and allow the President and military leaders to communicate with our forces and coordinate a response.

I also secured funding for the construction of an agricultural research facility at the UNL’s Innovation Campus. This facility will not only attract future scientists and industry leaders, but it will expand Nebraska’s leading role in agricultural innovation.

And last month, the president signed my bipartisan Winnebago Land Transfer Act into law. The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has worked diligently to achieve this victory for decades. The government never should have taken the Tribe’s land, and I am proud to be a part of restoring it back to them.

The government closest to the people serves the people best. So when I come home to Nebraska, sometimes I bring Washington with me. I hosted National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy at UNL’s Midwest Roadside Safety Facility for an electric vehicle roundtable and crash test demonstration

There are many questions surrounding the safety risks of these newly developed vehicles, and it is critical for the National Transportation Safety Board to know the stakes.
