As this new Congress begins, we are getting to work on the key issues affecting Americans.

Now that President Joe Biden has been sworn in, it's the Senate's job to vet and confirm his administration's nominees. I have had virtual meetings with Defense Secretary General Lloyd Austin and nominees for Secretary of the Department of Transportation, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Secretary of Commerce, Governor Gina Raimondo. During these meetings, we discussed issues ranging from modernizing our nuclear arsenal to supporting our truckers and ag haulers to ensuring America remains a leader in next-gen technologies.

It is my honor to serve as your senator, and I will express my views just as straightforwardly to the Biden administration as I have to the previous two. I look forward to finding common ground where we can and to working on the issues that matter most to Nebraskans.

Passage of the DIGIT Act is the culmination of years of effort by the bipartisan Senate Internet of Things Working Group, which I have long been a leader of. This bill was signed into law with the FY21 National Defense Authorization Act, and it means the United States is well-positioned to lead in innovating through the next generation of technology. The DIGIT Act will prioritize coordination of private sector experts with government agencies, helping Congress to create smarter policies to reach the full potential of the Internet of Things. This will position the United States to be a leader for a more connected future.

Every year I get the opportunity to nominate an impressive group of Nebraska students for our nation's five prestigious military academies. For the Class of 2025, I have picked 37 outstanding students. All of them come from different walks of life, but all have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their communities. If they are accepted into one of the academies, I know they will make Nebraska proud as they serve our country.

While the Nebraska National Guard was in Washington, D.C., assisting with security for the 59th Presidential Inauguration, I had the opportunity to meet some of the guardsmen and women in person. I was able to show them around the U.S. Capitol and onto the inaugural platform.

During their visit, Sergeant Jacob Anderbery from Axtell, NE, re-enlisted into the guard by taking the oath on the inaugural platform.

It was an honor to thank them in person for the service they provide for Nebraska and our nation.

t is a pleasure to work for you in the U.S. Senate. I am looking forward to what we can accomplish in the 117th Congress to benefit our state as we continue to recover from this pandemic.
