WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Commerce Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation and Safety, held a hearing today on the current state of the trucking industry, safety issues, and regulations as Congress considers a surface transportation reauthorization.

“The trucking industry is a key component of U.S. transportation and essential to our economy. However, I have repeatedly heard concerns from truckers and livestock haulers that many of the regulations they face are inflexible and fail to reflect real-world situations. I was pleased to hear feedback from stakeholders today regarding how federal policy can aid in truck safety, efficiency, and productivity,” said Senator Fischer.

Witnesses at the hearing included Chris Spear, President & CEO of the American Trucking Associations; Lewie Pugh, Executive Vice President of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association; Jake Parnell, a board member for the Livestock Marketing Association; Sergeant John Samis, President of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance; and Dawn King, President of the Truck Safety Coalition.
