WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), chairman of the Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety and Security convened a hearing titled “Rebuilding Infrastructure in America: State and Local Transportation Needs.” This hearing explored opportunities to improve the national transportation network and better connect our nation’s communities. Nebraska Department of Transportation Director Kyle Schneweis was one of the witnesses at today’s hearing.

“Today our committee listened to a variety of different perspectives about America’s infrastructure needs and how to best address them. I was happy to hear from Nebraska Department of Transportation Director Kyle Schneweis who highlighted the innovative steps Nebraska has taken on this front. I look forward to continuing my work with state and local leaders, the administration, and my colleagues here in Congress to update our infrastructure and move big projects forward at a faster rate,” said Senator Fischer.

Last week, the Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Nebraska will receive a $25 million grant for the construction of a new expressway, the Lincoln South Beltway. Senator Fischer worked closely with state and local leaders to secure the grant for this priority project.

Senator Fischer introduced the Build USA Infrastructure Act to ensure continued funding for the Highway Trust Fund after expiration of the FAST Act. The bill would provide states with more flexibility and control of their infrastructure funding by giving states greater purview over the design, permitting, and construction of projects. This legislation is modeled after Senator Fischer’s legislative success in developing innovative, sustainable transportation funding solutions in the Nebraska Unicameral, including the Build Nebraska Act and the Federal Funds Purchase Program. Because of these measures, Nebraska is initiating and completing projects at a faster pace.
