February Legislative Recap

Dear Friend,

In February, I fought to strengthen our country’s border and defend America’s troops. I supported our nation’s veterans and announced continued investment in Nebraska’s infrastructure.

Read more about my work for you below.

America’s national security is my top priority, and securing our nation begins with securing our border.

I’ve been to the southern border, and I’ve seen the chaos there. It’s nothing short of a humanitarian and national security crisis.

Congress must pass legislation that secures the border and keeps our nation safe. I voted against the recent National Security Supplemental Package because it fell short of that obligation. I will continue to fight for America’s national security, even when this administration fails to.

Last month, I led my colleagues on the Senate Armed Services Committee in sending a letter to President Biden expressing concerns about the administration’s plans that could force the U.S. Department of Defense to vacate communication airwaves, otherwise known as spectrum, normally reserved for military operations.

Unfortunately, that’s not the Biden administration’s only flawed military decision. At a time when America must project strength, President Biden’s fear of being blamed for “escalation” has only emboldened our enemies. The administration’s response to the January attacks on U.S. troops did not accomplish nearly enough to stop Iran’s axis of terror.

I will continue to demand a stronger response from President Biden to restore deterrence.

I voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021 to support our state’s roads, airports, water infrastructure, and more. Nebraska continues to see returns on that investment.

Last month, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Nebraska would receive over $10 million in grant funding to support the North Platte and Omaha Airport Authorities.

Maintaining and improving infrastructure is a key responsibility of the federal government, and these grants are great news for the many Nebraskans who rely on our airports to stay connected.

In February, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved a request from a group of Midwest governors to allow the year-round sale of gasoline with higher blends of ethanol, including 15 percent ethanol blends known as E15, in their states. While I appreciate that the EPA has finally approved the year-round availability of E15, that approval won’t go into effect until next year. The limited geography of the EPA’s approval and its needless delay until 2025 still complicate E15 sales.

I’m committed to working with my colleagues in Congress to pass my Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act, which will provide nationwide, permanent approval for the sale of this blend. My bill will benefit the environment, our ag producers, and drivers in Nebraska and across the country.

I’ve also introduced the Winnebago Land Transfer Act, which will transfer wrongfully seized land back to the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Last month, I introduced Winnebago Tribe Chairwoman Victoria Kitcheyan to testify in support of the bill at a Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing. Our bill was passed by the House of Representatives last month, and I look forward to passing it in the Senate soon.

In another win for Nebraska, the Nebraska Rural Health Association announced last month that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) of Nebraska and Western Iowa was selected as a pioneering site for a new system to improve rural Nebraska veterans’ access to health care. In 2023, I sent a letter urging the VA to establish a Rural Veteran Referral Program in Nebraska. I’m glad the VA has now fulfilled that request, taking a crucial step to ensure our veterans have access to the care they deserve.
