WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) released the following statement after voting against legislation to raise the debt ceiling and set federal spending levels:

“One of the federal government’s core responsibilities is upholding our national defense. I cannot vote for a bill that shortchanges our national security when our enemies are rapidly expanding their arsenals.

“When it comes to non-defense spending, this deal fails to make the substantial cuts needed to curb our government’s unsustainable fiscal trajectory. The White House unleashed trillions of dollars in wasteful spending over the last two and a half years – it’s going to take much more work to dig us out of this fiscal hole.

“I appreciate Speaker McCarthy’s efforts to secure this deal given the enormous challenges President Biden and Congressional Democrats put forward. Unfortunately for these key reasons, I cannot support the bill.”
