WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and U.S. Representative Don Bacon (R-Neb.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, today applauded the reauthorization of the CHIP IN for Vets Act. Fischer and Bacon introduced bicameral, bipartisan legislation to renew the program for an additional five years. The extension was signed into law by President Biden today. The legislation ensures local communities across the country can assist with the planning and construction of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care facilities.

“The CHIP In for Vets Act has already successfully facilitated the development of the new VA ambulatory clinic in Omaha. The clinic was built ahead of schedule and under budget as a result of this public-private partnership. Now, the full reauthorization of this critical program will ensure more communities can contribute to building facilities that will provide veterans with the quality care they deserve,” said Senator Fischer.

“Our veterans deserve the best in quality care and modern facilities. The re-authorization of the CHIP In for Vets Act will increase the opportunity for communities across the nation to invest in public-private partnerships. Omaha has benefited from this legislation championed by my friend and former Congressman Brad Ashford.  I look forward to the improvement in care it will create for America’s veterans,” said Rep. Bacon.

The original CHIP IN for Vets Act, led in the Senate by Fischer and passed by Congress in 2016, authorized the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to allow five U.S. communities to manage construction of VA projects as part of a pilot program. The VA appropriates millions of dollars to construction projects that remain unfinished or have not yet begun, and this program allows communities to take the lead, contributing the remaining finances to ensure these projects are completed on-time and on-budget. The bill signed into law today reauthorizes this program for another five years and opens the program up to any community in the U.S.
